['telfəd; nach T. Telford], 1963-68 Dawley ['dɔːlɪ], Stadt in der County Shropshire, England, 35 800 Einwohner; mehrere Industrieparks mit vielfältiger Industrie.
 
 
Zum Industriemuseum von Telford (Ironbridge Gorge Museum) gehören v. a. die von John Wilkinson (* 1728, ✝ 1808) und Abraham Darby (* 1750, ✝ 1791) erbaute Coalbrookdale-Brücke über den Severn, die älteste gusseiserne Brücke der Erde (erbaut 1775-79), und der älteste Kokshochofen der Erde (1709).
 
 
1963 als New Town zur Entlastung der Region Birmingham gegründet, 1968 durch Eingemeindungen erweitert.

['telfəd], Thomas, britischer Bauingenieur, * Westerkirk (Dumfries and Galloway Region) 9. 8. 1757, ✝ Westminster (heute zu London) 2. 9. 1834; errichtete zunächst Wohnbauten und Kirchen, trat dann jedoch v. a. als Konstrukteur bedeutender Brücken- und Kanalbauwerke sowie von Dockanlagen hervor..
 
Werke: Gusseisenbrücke über den Severn bei Buildwas, County Shropshire (1795-98); Kaledonischer Kanal (1803-22); Hängebrücke über die Menaistraße (1819-26); Gusseisenbrücke bei Tewkesbury, County Gloucestershire (1823-26); Lagerhäuser der Saint Catherine's Docks in London (1824-28).
